The brief
To photograph the people who keep the kurent tradition alive, a custom on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage, and to show the costume up close: sheepskin, bells, ribbons and the mask with its long red tongue.
On set
A simple portable backdrop set against an old brick wall, so every kurent stands in the same frame: young and old, parents with children, in groups and alone, masked and unmasked.
The result
A series I keep coming back to: one frame, many faces of the same old tradition.
